Phu Yen is a South-Central coastal province, lying from 12042'36" to 13041'28" North latitude and from 108040'40" to 109027'47" East longitude. It bounds with BinhDinh province in the North, KhanhHoa province in the South, the provinces of Daklak and GiaLai in the West and East Sea (South China Sea) in the East. PhuYen is 1,160 km from HaNoi and 561 km from HoChiMinh City. The transportation is such convenient as National Highway 1A crossing, National Highway 25 and Provincial Road 645 linking the provinces of Central Highlands, the North-South railway and TuyHoa airport, etc. making favorable conditions for developing the sea and ecological forest tourism.

Located in the tropics and monsoon, under the influence of ocean climate, PhuYen has two distinguished seasons: The rainy season (from September to December) and the dry season (from January to August). Yearly average temperature is 26.5oC and yearly average rainfall ranges from 1,600 mm to 1,700 mm.

PhuYen has seven districts (TuyHoa, PhuHoa, SongHinh, SonHoa, DongXuan, SongCau and TuyAn) and one central town (TuyHoa town). 

 

The transportation:

With the routes such as National Highway 1A, National Road 25, Provincial Road 644, National Road 1D (linking SongCau district with QuyNhon City), and the road from HoaHiep IZ to VungRo seaport; the inter-village, inter-commune road sytem is open and clear for easy communications; the North-South railway and airway (via TuyHoa airport, operating as of April 2003) are the additions, attending to the developing task of the province.

The power supply: The SongHinh Hydroelectric Plant with a capacity of 72MW is part of the national power sources, and the North-South 510-KVA line spreads through the province. Thanks to that, it is guaranteed to supply power for living and production activities in the whole province. At present, in the pipeline is the project of building the BaHa-River Hydroelectric Plant, with a capacity of 3 times higher than that of the current SongHinh Hydroelectric Plant.

The water supply: The PhuYen Water Supply Plant (capacity of 28,500 cu. m/day) provides clean water to the TuyHoa town's area, the neighboring regions, and HIZ. Concurrently, new constructions of some water supply plants are being executed, in order to serve other districts and townlets with the capacity of 13,000 cu. m/day.

The posts and telecommunications: The telecom network in PhuYen is in pretty good condition, showing that the post offices from the provincial center to the districts' and communes' are equipped with modern technologies such as microwave, optical cable, etc. assuring to keep local, national and global communications uninterrupted. Total of post-offices, agents, and kiosks in the entire province is 133 units, number of the phone subcribers on the network is 14,716; the postal service is also growing fast to the rural areas, remote and mountainous regions, full types of express delivery service like EMS, DHL, etc.

  • Phu Yen lies at the Eastern side of TruongSon range, with hills and mountains making up 70% of the natural area. The topography is sloping obviously from West to East; the plain band is narrow and multi-partitioned; with 200 km-length seaside and numberous ranges of mountains that project into the sea, forming straits, bays and lagoons, where give advantages to the development of tourism, shipment, and aquaculture for export.

    Aquaculture is the fast-growing economic sector of the province, with the total breeding area of 2,950 hectares, giving a reaping output of 3,570 tons; additionally, various kinds of high-value seafood such as So-Huyet (blood arca), tuna, sugpo prawn, and lobster.   

  • Soil in Phu Yen is very diversified, including 8 main soil groups suited to various kinds of crop plants.

    Minerals resource is plentiful in great reserves such as colored granite (approx. 55 million cu. m), diatomite (over 90 cu. m), bauxite, fluoride (300,000 tons), mineral water, peat, mineral sand gold.

  • Argricultural land area of 72,390 hectares, forestry land of about 209,377 ha, specialized land of 12,297 ha, residential land of 5,720 ha, vacant land of 203,728 ha.

    Various kinds of valuable, rare woods and forest-products; what is more, the national natural preserve park of Krong-Trai that stretches on 20,190 hectares, with a diverse flora and fauna.

  • The network of rivers of Ba, BanThach, KyLo  ..., with a total area of 4,886 sq. km, assuring to provide water sufficient for the agricultural irrigation.

HUMAN RESOURCE

  • The statistics till 2003 showed that the workforce of the province was 598,551 people (occupying 71.5% of the province's population), at young ages, diligent, learning-eager and well-educated, capable of fast access to scientific and technical advances of the world. This is one of the strong points, as a vital force for the scio-economic development of the province.

  • PhuYen has a colleges network (the teachers' college, the construction college #3) training about 600 students a year, one institute branch that majors in financing and banking and train over 300 students a year, and other vocational and training centers where train about 1,400 technicians and 800 workers skilled from the grade 3/7 and up.
